Apart from being famous for its landscapes, Kashmir delights visitors with its edifices, which are remnants of ancient cultures and civilisations, which bloomed here at some point of time. Travellers, who have a penchant for such quaint structures, can visit the Khanqah of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, popularly called the Khanqah of Shah Hamadan. Popular traditions link it with the city called Hamadan in Persia, where Hamadani is believed to be born. He is considered prominent in spreading Islam in Kashmir, after he came here several years ago. A great scholar and poet, he played an important role in shaping the culture of this city.

Although the structure has a modern-looking architecture, looking at the details gives hints at the presence of a mosque here at some point of time. Made largely of wood, it consists of cloisters, which were added to it later by its caretakers. Carefully-built bricks fill up the spaces in between the wooden parts while intricate wood carvings beautify the doors and windows of the structure. People must behold the wooden cornice inside it that is an exquisite example of fine workmanship. The interiors are divided into a large hall and 14 different chambers, which are used for the purpose of storing goods.

Today, the edifice stands as a prestigious dedication to Shah Hamadan, that also houses the room where he stayed during his visit. A blend of central-Asian and Kashmiri architectures, Khanqah serves as the sacred grounds for Friday prayers. A number of holy relics belonging to Hamadani are kept here that add to the value of this place. These tranquil locations of Jammu and Kashmir are sure to find a place in the itinerary of Srinagar tour for globetrotters.
