Likir Monastery

This monastery is located on the Srinagar-Leh national highway near the village of Saspol and belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Lhachen Gyalpo, the fifth king of Ladakh, presented the land of this site to Lama Duwang Chosje, who was an avid practitioner of meditation. Thus, the Lama blessed this land with the construction of this monastery in the year 1065 AD. Initially, it was under the Kadampa sect but its association was changed with the Gelugpa Order.

The Likir Monastery was destroyed in a fire and was later reconstructed in the 18th century. This gompa houses three clay images of different forms of Lord Buddha that are Sakyamuni, Marme Zat and Maitreya. Murals of Mahakala and Yamantaka (forms of Buddha) are also present inside this monastery. An impressive repository containing old manuscripts, religious documents and domestic costumes is also present in this monastery. Many beautiful chortens having statues of Amitabha and Avalokitesvara adorn the entrance of this monastery. The Likir Festival is celebrated in premises of this monastery on the 12th month of the Tibetan calender every year. You can avail various packages on travel portals to reach Leh Ladakh, which is one of the top holiday destinations in India to visit this monastery.
