Naini Lake

Naini Lake is one of the four lakes of Kumaon Hills and Nainital is named after this ravishing wonder of nature. This lake was discovered in 1823 by G. W. Traill, the then Commissioner of Kumaon and Garhwal, and its colonisation was pioneered by P. Barron, a European businessman.

According to legends, while Lord Shiva was taking the body of His wife Goddess Parvati to Mount Kailash, one of her eyes fell on this place. The emerald eye of the goddess led to the formation of a crescent-shaped lake, known as Naini Lake.

The lake, surrounded by seven hills, forms the centre of the town of Nainital. Nature lovers can find a truly peaceful and tranquil atmosphere at the lake while adoring its marvellous surroundings. Tourists can also indulge in activities like row boating and paddle boating at this lake.
